Inspired by Janis

“There isn't going to be any turning point. ... There isn't going to be any next-month-it'll-be-better, next fucking year, next fucking life. You don't have any time to wait for. You just got to look around you and say, "So this is it. This is really all there is to it. This little thing." Everybody needing such little things and they can't get them. Everybody needing just a little ... confidence from somebody else and they can't get it. Everybody, everybody fighting to protect their little feelings. Everybody, you know, like reaching out tentatively but drawing back. It's so shallow and seems so ... fucking ... it seems like such a shame. It's so close to being like really right and good and open and amorphous and giving and everything. But it's not. And it ain't gonna be.

Janis Joplin - a woman so raw, so rare; her genuine being, her childlike innocence, her boldness in showing profound emotion, Janice Joplin was utterly herself!
This photo shoot is dedicated to Janice and other genuine legends from late sixties. Our admiration for their talent, presence and style gave inspiration to create the whole ambiance to bring their poetry alive.

CHAMELEON
For me she is like a
brightly colored
chameleon.
She is constantly
changing
like her art.

She is always
looking for
the harmony
which you can find
in the Nirvana.

A harmony
which shines in her style
and enchants
everyone.

Her positive
explosive
energy
can inspire you;
enlighten you
as the blinding light
of the sun.

She makes
magic happen
with her warm colors,
and lets us
play with our creativity.

For me,
her style
is like a motor
which generates
my art.
Poem by Alexandra
(Poetry inspired from DURGA fashion collection and Janis Joplin)

This project emerged from Alexandra who prompted us to celebrate the genuine nature and beauty of Janice Joplin. We both wanted to show these incredible poets in the light of inspiration and leave out the so often quoted destructive side.

The clothing for the shooting is all from DURGA. Its a smashing mix comprising of vintage gowns, redesigned dresses from 70's and up-cycled materials from the same era.

We chose the location - Cafe Doors Palace in Amsterdam, as it completely matches the theme -it's authentic, real, with wonderful staff, iconic music and rocking mood.

To finalize, we picked some philosophical quotes from our inspirational poets:
Death makes angels of us all and gives us wings where we had shoulders smooth as ravens claws.
Jim Morrison

Expose yourself to your deepest fear; after that, fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes. You are free.
Jim Morrison

The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. You trade in your reality for a role. You give up your ability to feel, and in exchange, put on a mask.
Jim Morrison

Don't compromise yourself. You are all you've got.
Janis Joplin

Being an intellectual creates a lot of questions and no answers.
Janis Joplin

You have to go on and be crazy. Craziness is like heaven.
Jimi Hendrix
